Ask five cleaning companies how often you should deep clean and you'll get five answers — usually correlated with how often they'd like to sell you one. So here is the honest version, based on what our crews actually find in Kuala Lumpur homes.
The Baseline: Twice a Year
For a typical household that keeps up with weekly surface cleaning, a full deep clean every six months keeps grime from ever reaching the "project" stage. Kitchen grease film, bathroom limescale and dust behind furniture accumulate slowly enough that a six-month cycle catches them while they still wipe off easily.
Why KL Homes Drift From the Baseline
Malaysia's climate is not neutral. Three local factors shorten the cycle:
- Humidity. Year-round moisture accelerates mould in bathrooms and wardrobes. If you spot black speckling on silicone seals within three months of cleaning them, your bathroom needs quarterly attention even if the rest of the house doesn't.
- Haze season. During bad haze months, fine particulates settle indoors even with windows shut. A post-haze wipe-down of sills, fan blades and aircon filters is worth adding regardless of your regular schedule.
- Open-window cooking. Homes that wok-fry daily build kitchen grease at two to three times the rate of light-cooking households. Degrease the hood and splashback quarterly; the rest of the kitchen can stay on the six-month cycle.
Adjust for Your Household
Move to a quarterly deep-clean cycle if two or more apply: pets that shed, children under five, anyone with dust allergies or asthma, carpets in main living areas, or a home beside a main road or construction site. Stretch to a yearly cycle only if you live alone, cook rarely and run air purifiers — and even then, keep bathrooms on a six-month rhythm.
The Signs You've Waited Too Long
- The extractor hood filter drips or smells when the stove is on.
- Shower glass stays cloudy after normal cleaning.
- Sneezing indoors but not outdoors — a classic dust-mite signal from mattresses and fabric furniture.
- Aircon airflow feels weaker at the same settings.
- Skirting boards show a visible grey line along the top edge.
Two or more of these means the next deep clean should be soon, and slightly more aggressive than usual.
Making It Painless
The easiest schedule is one you don't have to remember. Our maintenance clients simply add a deep-clean upgrade to one visit every six months — same crew, same booking, bigger checklist. If that sounds better than a weekend of scrubbing, see what our deep cleaning service covers or ask for a quote.
